Holding Space means "that we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they're on without judging them, making them feel inadequate... When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts, offer unconditional support, and let go of judgement and control. - Heather Plett

Complex Trauma
While Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops from a single traumatic event, Complex trauma develops from an individual's exposure to multiple traumatic events that are often invasive or interpersonal in nature.
Self-Harm
Self-harm or self-injury are ways of hurting oneself intentionally to find release from overwhelming painful emotions and/or thoughts. Usually when people self-harm, they do no do it as a suicide attempt although it does increase the risk for suicide.
Suicidal Ideation
Suicide is a leading cause of death. When an individual is in crisis and has a plan to die by suicide, getting safely through the next second, minute, hour, and day is critical!

Anxiety vs.
Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety presents itself in children in many different ways some of which can be alarming, distressing, and confusing for parents. Some children will appear to be out of control, displaying defiant and/or angry behavior. Other children will appear to be avoidant, extremely shy or inattentive.
Depression
Feeling sad or hopeless as well as having a change in mood is a part of every child's life when certain stressors arise; but when these feelings last more than a couple of weeks or even when a child has control over a situation, depression (along with anxiety) may be the cause.
Attachment Styles
Adoption/Foster Concerns
Attachment is a bond created between a caregiver and a child due to the child's foundational desire to remain close and connected to the caregiver for survival. There are four attachment styles or patterns of behavior a child develops to maintain connection with their caretaker - secure, avoidant, ambivalent, and disorganized.
About Me: Leticia Mayes, M.S., LPC, CCTP
Have you found yourself in a dark, hard place in life? Does it feel like you are stuck in quicksand and no matter what you try, you can't get out? I am here to support you in your journey to find relief from overwhelming emotions and painful memories. It's important to me that each person feels safe in their body and environment while also gaining the ability to trust and connect with others as they work through therapy for trauma, anxiety, depression, attachment concerns, suicidal ideation, or self-harm.

My aim is to utilize an integrative and collaborative approach to counseling as well as focus on the whole person to facilitate coping, a sense of freedom, and meaning in life. When providing therapy for a child/adolescent, it's essential to work in partnership with the parents, equipping them with education and strategies, to build and enrich healthy relationships.

When counseling from a faith based perspective, I believe that my clients can achieve goals by discovering their identity in Christ and embracing both pain and joy so as to alleviate suffering. Evidence based approaches support the importance of identifying and accepting hurt/pain as a part of life thus allowing for hope and an experience of joy.
